Blocked Drains: Causes, Quick Fixes and When to Call a Plumber

Plumber fixing a sink pipe

Blocked drains are one of the most common problems in Cape Town homes. They start small, with a slow basin or a gurgling sound, and can end with dirty water on your bathroom floor. This guide explains the causes, the safe quick fixes you can try yourself, and the signs that it is time to call a plumber.

We keep it simple. Most of the steps below need only a plunger, a bucket and a bit of patience.

Signs of blocked drains to look out for

A drain rarely blocks all at once. It usually gives warning signs first. The sooner you act, the easier and cheaper the fix.

  • Water drains slowly from the basin, bath or shower.
  • You hear gurgling from the plughole or toilet after you flush.
  • There is a bad smell from drains, even after cleaning.
  • The toilet water rises high before it slowly goes down.
  • Water bubbles up in the outside gully when you run a tap or the washing machine.
  • Damp patches or sunken soil appear along the line of the outside pipe.

What causes blocked drains in Cape Town homes

Each cause needs a slightly different fix. Knowing which one you have saves time.

Fat and cooking oil

Oil is liquid when hot but turns hard in a cold pipe. Over months it builds a thick layer that catches food and soap.

Wet wipes and sanitary items

Wipes do not break down like toilet paper, even when the pack says flushable. They are a top cause of a blocked toilet.

Hair and soap

Hair binds with soap scum in shower and bath traps. This is the most common cause of a slow shower.

Old clay pipes

Many older homes still have clay drain pipes. Joints shift and crack over time, and roots can find their way in.

Sand and grit

Sand from the beach, building work or washing muddy items settles in the low parts of the pipe and builds up.

Winter rain overload

In heavy winter rain, stormwater that wrongly runs into the sewer gully can overload the system and push water back up.

Quick fixes for a blocked drain you can try safely

Try these steps in order. Stop if the water starts rising or you see sewage. That needs a professional.

  1. 1
Remove and clean the plug or grid
Pull out hair and soap from the plughole. A bent wire or a cheap plastic drain hook works well.
  2. 2
    Pour hot water
Pour a kettle of hot water slowly into kitchen drains to soften fat. Use hot, not boiling, water on plastic pipes and never on a toilet bowl.
  3. 3
    Use a plunger
Fill the basin with a little water, block the overflow hole with a wet cloth, then plunge firmly ten to fifteen times.
  4. 4
Clean the trap under the sink
Put a bucket under the U-shaped pipe, unscrew it by hand and clear the gunk. Refit it and check that it does not drip.
  5. 5
Try bicarbonate of soda and vinegar
Pour half a cup of bicarbonate of soda, then a cup of vinegar. Wait 30 minutes and flush with hot water. This helps with mild build-up only.
A safety tipAvoid strong drain chemicals. They can damage older pipes, splash back on your skin and are dangerous if a plumber later has to open the pipe. They also seldom clear a solid blockage like wipes or roots.

How to clear a blocked toilet

A blocked toilet is unpleasant, but you can often fix it in a few minutes. Do not keep flushing. Each flush adds more water to a bowl that cannot empty.

  • Put on gloves and lay old towels around the base of the toilet.
  • Use a toilet plunger with a flange (the soft lip on the bottom). It seals better than a flat sink plunger.
  • Push down gently first to push out air, then plunge firmly in and out.
  • If the water drains, flush once to test. Keep the lid down in case it rises again.
  • If the water does not move after a few tries, stop. Something solid may be stuck in the pan or the pipe.

When to call a plumber for blocked drains

Home fixes work for a single slow basin. Some signs tell you the problem is bigger and further down the line.

  • More than one fitting is slow or blocked at the same time.
  • Water or sewage comes up in the outside gully or a manhole.
  • The blockage keeps coming back within weeks.
  • You smell sewage inside the house.
  • You see damp walls, a wet floor or sunken soil near a drain pipe.
  • You have tried a plunger and a drain spring and nothing moved.

At that point a good plumber Cape Town home owners trust will find the cause, not just push the blockage further along. Our plumbing services cover leaks, toilets, taps and blocked drains, so one visit can sort out the whole problem.

How professional drain unblocking works

A plumber chooses the method based on where the blockage is and what it is made of. Here is a simple overview.

MethodWhat it doesBest for
Drain rodsFlexible rods pushed in from the gully or manhole to break up a blockageOutside lines and main drains
Electric drain machineA spinning cable cuts through hard build-upFat, hair, wipes and some roots
High pressure jettingA strong water jet scours the inside of the pipe cleanGrease, sand and silt along long runs
Drain cameraA small camera shows cracks, roots and collapsed sectionsRepeat blockages and old clay pipes
Pipe repairA damaged section is dug up and replacedBroken or sunken pipes

Not every job needs every step. Many blocked drains clear with rods or a machine in one visit.

Your drain or the City’s drain?

In general, the pipes on your property are your responsibility. The main sewer line in the street belongs to the municipality. If the manhole outside your gate overflows, or your neighbours have the same problem, the blockage may be in the City’s line.

In that case, report it to the City of Cape Town before you pay for a call-out. If the problem is clearly inside your boundary, a private plumber is the way to go.

What affects the cost of drain unblocking

Every job is different. These are the main things that change the price.

  • Where the blockage is. A basin trap is quick, a main line under paving takes longer.
  • How easy it is to reach. A clear gully or manhole saves time.
  • What caused it. Roots and collapsed pipes need more than a simple clear.
  • Whether a camera check or pipe repair is needed.
  • The time of the call. After-hours work usually costs more.

As a rough guide only, a simple blocked drain clear in Cape Town often costs around R700 to R1,800. Camera checks and pipe repairs cost more. Prices vary, so always get a quote first.

How to prevent blocked drains

Small daily habits keep most drains running well for years.

  • Wipe greasy pans with paper towel before washing them.
  • Pour cooled cooking oil into a jar and throw it in the bin.
  • Fit a cheap hair catcher in the shower and bath.
  • Only flush toilet paper. Put wipes, cotton buds and sanitary items in a bin.
  • Rinse sand off outside before showering after the beach.
  • Keep gully covers in place so leaves and soil cannot wash in.
  • Make sure gutters and downpipes run to stormwater, not into the sewer gully.
Older bathroom?
If your geyser is also giving trouble, read our guide on a burst geyser. Leaks and blocked drains often show up together in older homes, and an older bathroom may be due for a refresh. Our bathroom renovations include new waste pipes where needed.

Blocked drains: common questions

Can I use bleach or caustic soda to clear blocked drains?
We do not advise it. Strong chemicals can damage old pipes, burn your skin and harm the bacteria in a septic tank. They also rarely clear a solid blockage. Try a plunger, hot water or a drain spring first, then call a plumber.
Why do my drains smell even when they are not blocked?
A bad smell often means the water seal in a trap has dried out, or there is a slow build-up of fat and soap in the pipe. Run water in unused basins and showers once a week. If the smell stays, the vent pipe or a cracked pipe may be the cause.
Who fixes a blocked drain outside my property?
Pipes inside your boundary are usually your job. The main sewer in the road is normally the City’s job. If your neighbours have the same problem, or the manhole outside your gate is overflowing, report it to the City of Cape Town.
How do I know if a blocked toilet is a bigger drain problem?
If only the toilet is slow, the blockage is usually in the toilet or just after it. If the shower, bath or outside gully also drains slowly or gurgles when you flush, the blockage is further down the main line and needs a plumber.
How often should drains be cleaned?
Most homes do not need regular cleaning if you keep fat, wipes and sand out of the pipes. Older homes with clay pipes, or homes that had blocked drains before, may benefit from a check every year or two.
